Definitions of Accredited and Registered Status and Eligibility to Write Sonography Canada Exams

Effective February 1, 2018, Accreditations Canada is the sole accreditation body for the accreditation of diagnostic medical sonography educational programs in Canada. Prior to February 1, 2018, program accreditation was performed by Joule, a division of the Canadian Medical Association.

Accredited      To become accredited, a program must demonstrate its compliance with the Accreditation Canada's requirements for accreditation.

Programs may be accredited for 6 years (fully accredited) or 2 years (partial accreditation).  If a new program does not yet have graduates, the best it can obtain is a 2-year accreditation status.

Registered      A Registered education program is a program which has Registered with Accreditation Canada for full accreditation and either a visit by accreditation Canada has been tentatively scheduled pending a successful Phase I review or the assessment is underway.

Current status of Accreditation Canada accredited programs: https://accreditation.ca/educational-programs/

Eligibility to Write Sonography Canada Exams Only graduates of educational programs that are Accredited by Accreditation Canada at the time of their graduation and have had a continuous status of either Registered or Accredited for the duration of the candidate's time in the program will be permitted to follow the examination pathway for Graduates of Canadian Accredited programs.

Disclaimer The above list of Accredited and Registered programs is current as of February 1, 2018. Sonography Canada does not endorse or recommend any program.
